Volvo Penta Gimbal Bearing Replacement

A transom growl on a Volvo SX or DP is the gimbal bearing. Volvo's bellows and bearing carrier differ from MerCruiser, and Brad sets them up the Volvo way.

On a Volvo Penta SX or Duoprop drive, a growl or squeal from the transom in gear points to the gimbal bearing riding the driveshaft through the gimbal housing. It fails from running dry or from water past a cracked bellows. Brad replaces Volvo gimbal bearings, presses the new one in square, checks alignment, and renews the protecting bellows. The Volvo carrier and bellows setup is not the same as MerCruiser, so it gets done the Volvo way.

Volvo Penta gimbal bearing symptoms

  • Growl or rumble at the transom that disappears with the drive off
  • Squeal in gear at idle that shifts as you steer
  • Noise worst on a cold start, easing with warmth
  • A wet or rusted bearing when the drive comes off
  • Roughness turning the bearing by hand
  • Onset right after a bellows leak reached the bearing

What Brad checks on the Volvo gimbal

  • Pull the drive and spin the bearing for roughness
  • Inspect the Volvo driveshaft bellows and carrier seal
  • Check the u-joints and driveshaft while access is open
  • Verify the bearing seats square in the Volvo housing
  • Confirm engine and drive alignment
  • Check the gimbal housing and transom seal for intrusion

The fix and what to expect

Brad removes the old Volvo gimbal bearing, presses in the new one square, and checks alignment before the drive returns. The Volvo driveshaft bellows and carrier seal get renewed so the bearing stays dry. Because Volvo routes and seals this area differently from MerCruiser, using the right Volvo parts and sequence matters. Done correctly it lasts for years. A seized Volvo gimbal bearing can damage the driveshaft, so it is worth catching at the first growl.

Volvo's bearing carrier is not a MerCruiser swap

The mistake on Volvo gimbal work is treating it like a MerCruiser. Volvo uses its own bearing carrier and seal arrangement in the gimbal housing, and the bellows and clamps are Volvo-specific parts, not Alpha parts that happen to look close. Force a MerCruiser-style approach and the seal weeps and the bearing gets wet again. Brad orders against the Volvo SX or DP breakdown and seats the carrier and bearing the way Volvo intended, which is why the repair holds instead of coming back growling next season.
